Private mailbox vs. P.O. box: which is right for you?
If you want your mail somewhere safer or more private than your front porch, you’ve got two main options: a P.O. box at the post office, or a private mailbox at a place like ours. They sound similar, but the differences matter — especially if you get packages or run a business. Here’s how to choose.
The big difference: a real street address
A P.O. box gives you a number at the post office. A private mailbox gives you a real street address — our address, with your box number as a suite or unit.
That one difference drives most of the others. A real street address looks like a business location, not a box, and it can go on your website, cards, and contracts without broadcasting where you live.
Packages: the deciding factor for most people
This is where a private mailbox pulls ahead. A P.O. box can only receive mail and packages sent through USPS. It can’t accept a UPS, FedEx, or DHL delivery — the carrier has nowhere to leave it.
A private mailbox accepts packages from every carrier — USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL — because it’s a street address with a staffed store behind it. Your packages are signed for and held safely indoors until you pick them up, not left on a step. If you shop online or your business receives shipments, that alone usually settles the question.
Access on your schedule
Post office lobby hours can be limiting. Our mailboxes come with 24-hour access, so you can grab your mail early in the morning or late at night, whenever it fits your day — even when the store itself is closed.
Privacy and a professional face
For anyone running a business from home, a private mailbox keeps your home address off your public materials. Customers, vendors, and Google see a legitimate street address instead of your living room. And your mail sits in a locked compartment inside a secured store rather than an unattended bank of boxes.
What it costs
Our private mailboxes start at $25/month, and setup is quick. Bring two forms of ID and we’ll get you going the same day (a P.O. box has its own USPS fee schedule, which you’d set up at the post office).
Quick comparison
- Street address? Private mailbox: yes. P.O. box: no, just a box number.
- UPS / FedEx / DHL packages? Private mailbox: yes. P.O. box: USPS only.
- Packages held indoors? Private mailbox: yes. P.O. box: parcel locker if it fits.
- Access hours? Private mailbox: 24-hour. P.O. box: lobby hours.
- Good for business use? Private mailbox: yes. P.O. box: limited.
When a P.O. box still makes sense
If you only receive letter mail, never get carrier packages, and want the lowest possible cost, a basic P.O. box can do the job. But the moment packages or a professional address enter the picture, a private mailbox is the better fit.
