The photo is in color on a plain white background, sized so your head fills 50–69% of the frame (chin to crown, roughly 1 to 1‑1/4 inch) — the exact State Department rule that gets applications rejected when it’s off.
Before you sit down
- Neutral expression, both eyes open, mouth closed, facing the camera head-on.
- Skip glasses, sunglasses, hats, earbuds, and uniforms. Religious headwear is allowed with a note.
- Avoid black or white tops — they wash out against the white background. A collared or business-appropriate shirt photographs best.
